Some More Metalsmithing

Susanne, the goldsmith I already took a class at, told me that she had another class and a place was free on Sunday. So I walked up the road with some thoughts and some of the garnets I had purchased for these occasions ;)

We milled a rather thick piece of sterling and I formed it to fit my wrist. I soldered on the setting and stamped some viking age designs into the metal. And then I began to set my first stone, something I wanted to do for ages :)

I'm also trying some techniques at home, with less expensive materials, just to practice a bit.
Here I mage some granules from srap copper pieces and sweat solderes them onto copper sheet, together with a simple setting.

After pickling:

Sawing out the shape of the pendant:

I set a simple glass pebble into the pendant. I love the contrast of the blue and copper :)
On the other pendant I tried my new dapping dies cube. I soldered some copper granules to the inside of the bowl-shaped pendant.

And I messed around with brass a bit. Not yet excactly what I want, but I know what to do better next time :)

I also made this landscape pendant for my love. It depicts a landscape where he spent many happy days.
I sanded the pendant a bit more after taking this photo, here it still looks a bit messy, but you can get the idea, I think :)

Tenntråd Time

I absolutely adore those lovely Sami bracelets, but they are very expensive if you want to buy one. I found a little crafting kit for such a bracelet, including all materials and a tutorial.

Following the tutorial I braided the tenntråd ( a textile core, wrapped with thin silver alloyed tin wire) and also used the narrow reindeer leather strap.

The braid then had to be attached to a wider leather strip and closures made of leather and reindeer antler were sewn to the ends. The leather strip then was closed on the backside by stitching.

I also ordered a length of tenntråd to test braiding some Birka posaments.

Some time ago I was able to get a set of engraving chisels for a good price. We had some sheets of copper from old rain drains at home and I only wanted to try the chisels in fact.
Well, somehow a little deer shape formed on the copper sheet, based on the deer made of golden wire from Birka.
I did not want to leave this piece without a function, so I decided to turn it into a disc brooch.

After sawing, filing and some polishing the disc looked like this:

Then I wanted to try something else, low temperature enameling with Efco powder. As I don't own a kiln, this seems to be a good technique to make enameled surfaces in a regular baking oven.

Fittings for a needle are soldered to the backside, but the soldering is a bit crappy ;) I then added a brass needle which I made from strong wire and attached it.

Working with Silver

Gerade, Zickzack, Slalom ;)

Last Weekend I was finally able to fulfil a desire I had for a very long time: A goldsmithing course.
It took place just around the corner, literally. Down the road, up the hill, left side ;)
In the workshop and under the guidance of Susanne Lefarth the three other participants and me practised some sawing on a copper plate to get the right feelng. Straight, zigzag, slalom ;)

Then we moved on with some more precious metal. Each of us did a project on our own. Rings seemed to be higly rated that day but I wanted to make something else since I don't wear rings very often.
I decided to do a quite plain pendant, inspired by slavic lunula/lunitsa pendants.
The figure was cut out and filed. Then the plate was cambered slightly and the surface was given structure with a ball peen hammer. I then soldered a narrow smothed silver tube to the pendant. After the cleaning it shone like the moon herself and I admit, I was a bit proud of it ;)

The next day some of us finished the project they had started before or began a new one.
I wanted to make something shiny for Fimbulmyrk too :)
I decided to make him a Thor's hammer amulet, inspired a bit by a find from Bornholm:

© Nationalmuseet, København

Wieder wurde gesägt, gefeilt gelötet. Und diesmal auch Punziert.

Again I sawd, filed and soldered. And did some punch decoration this time.

I had some time leftto begin another little project. There was some space left on the silver plate in which the form of a needle would fit perfectly.
In the end this naalbinding needlewith punch decoration was the result. I already tested it and it works perfectly :)

In search of the sun

Nass.

 Wet. Inside, outside, everywhere.
The baby dyer's woad is reaching its head in search of the sun.

To have something in my spinning stash in case the rain goes on and on and on... I dyed a 150g roving. Should keep me busy and colourful enough ;)

Aaand there was the annual hobby expo, of course :) There were not much new things to explore, but I knew what I was looking fore and pillaged some booths with lovely metal and glass beads.

I especially like these two beads in the shape of a goddess. Sadly, those were the only ones available. I have to investigate a bit, need more of those beauties ;)

And then. Arctic Fire 2013 started. Those mad guys wanted to make a sword and scabbard in only four days. With live broadcasts and a riddle twined into the whole idea. What a great thought. The blade is fnished, the quest goes on. If you are lucky and can guess the name of the sword and the place where it will be hidden, you have the chance to look for it in real and hopefully find it. And eventually claim it. What a wonderful way to bring some magic into this world.
Go to the homepage. I deeply recommend this project.

Schaut doch mal vorbei :)

While watching the boys I wasn't idle. I grabbed some glassbeads and wire and turned them into wire coated treasures ;)
I made different versions of them and there are more to come.
I'll put a bunch of them into the Shop during next week, I think.

Glanz in meiner Hütte

...Of Teeth And Teeth

I really like bone combs, they're looking just great. But they are not as robust as I would wish them to be. And I don't use combs often, as my hair seems to like brushes better ;) So I wouldn't use a bone comb very often and therefore they are too expensive.
But I love those patterns on bone combs and so I got me a wooden comb and switched on my woodburning pen.

Now for some different teeth ;)
I got some fox teeth and tried the viking knit technique on one of them with some brass wire. I like it, so more of them will follow :)

On sunday there was a party going on, two dear friends had their handfasting :)

My presents for them were the brass covered needle case from the last post and a hand carved Awen pendand from the wood of the apple tree that grew in the couple's yard until recently. On the backside I burned in the ogham sign for apple.

Mrs Mondjung and me also gave the handfasting bands to the couple :)
The technique is brocaded tabletweaving from wool. The pattern is taken from viking age finds from Birka.

I made the green and white bands, Mrs Mondjung the red and black ones.

Kleinkram zwischendurch

These days I work on a big project, Mr. and Mrs. Moonvirgin need some clothes for their handfasting. I can say by now, it's going to be très chic *g* I don't know how I managed, but I also found some minutes for other little projects ;)

I got two little and very fine bone needles and I don't want to break them but I don't want to hide them in an ugly plastic thingy. So I took some leftover fabric from my woolen dress and made a little needle roll. I love the colourful glint on this fabric.

I worked these two granulated and silver plated pearls from Mrs. Moonvirgin's and my last looting into earrings in slavic style.

Well...the looting *g* We visited our local crafts fair and found some great things for to turn into even better things ;)
