Scheibenfibel - Disc brooch

Some time ago I was able to get a set of engraving chisels for a good price. We had some sheets of copper from old rain drains at home and I only wanted to try the chisels in fact.
Well, somehow a little deer shape formed on the copper sheet, based on the deer made of golden wire from Birka.
I did not want to leave this piece without a function, so I decided to turn it into a disc brooch.

After sawing, filing and some polishing the disc looked like this:

Then I wanted to try something else, low temperature enameling with Efco powder. As I don't own a kiln, this seems to be a good technique to make enameled surfaces in a regular baking oven.

Fittings for a needle are soldered to the backside, but the soldering is a bit crappy ;) I then added a brass needle which I made from strong wire and attached it.

Knochenrecycling

Some months ago, Fimbulmyrk brought me a bone from the woods. It was a bit dirty and scattered at the ends, but I could see some hidden beauty within.
So I cooked it, cut off the ends and gave it a fine polish from the in- and outside.
Then I covered the middle section with wire in trichinopoly technique (viking knitting) and added one of my posament beads.
I also made a two-in-two chain and a little flattened hook.

So, now look at this dirty bone from the woods:

To hold the needles in place inside the bone I felted two plugs from wool.

Some of you might know some of the following pics from an other blog, but I wanted to show them myself too ;)

First, I made a new sheath for my father's Martiini knife. It had a sheath, but he didin't like it that much and asked me to make a more decent one. So, here it is :)

I put my carving tools into a new little cozy home. A nice way to recycle old trousers ;)

It's closed on both sides with some hook-and-loop tape.

And now I'd like to show you a sheath which I made for a very special knife you might know from here.

Since the handle is shaped like a bird's head I wantet to enter this morphology into the sheath too. So I drew a celtic bird as it can be found in various Irish manuscripts and used pyrography to draw it onto the leather.

Winterliches Recycling

Yesterday I did some handicrafts with scissors, glue and paper. Well, no normal paper but some empty toilet paper rolls. Just as in those kindergarten days gone by, but this time with some more style than those field glasses I used to do when I was little *g*
I took some paper rolls, flattened them and cut them into thin stripes. Then I glued those slices together, ready was the star/snowflake :)
