An Experiment in Making Spiral Wire

I love to work with Tenntråd and I love to make viking age posaments. I try to get as close to the appearance of the remnant pieces as I can. But still there was the problem of the material. Tenntråd is lovely to work with, but it is a relativly modern material. The Sami people fabricate it and work with it in their traditional craft, making beautiful embroideries and braided bracelets and necklaces.
The material at the Birka burials isn't Tenntråd, though. According to A. Geijer the spiral wires used for the posaments consisted either of a drawn gold or silver wire with a round cross section wrapped around a silk core:

So insdead of using the rather modern pewter wire from Scandinavia I wanted to try making my own spiral silver.
I made some attempts earlier, but since I dindn't have the right tools I was not very happy with the outcome.

The procedure of making the spiral wire seemed similar to that still used today by some Sami craftspeople. Obviously for big scale production of Tenntråd machines are used nowadays, but there are still people around who know how to make the wire by hand. I found this very helpful video from Norway, 1984:
https://www.nb.no/nbsok/nb/6f0a0f1eb2841bd2a98c1358864bb718.nbdigital?lang=no

For my own first experiment I used
  • Kromski drop spindle, top-whorl, 85g
  • Silver coated copper wire, 0,2mm
  • Serafil 20, 100% polyester, z-plied
  • Lazy Kate to hold the wire

I tied the core yarn to the spindle and started to wrap/z-spin the wire around the core, very much like core spinning with textile fibres. There were little gaps between the individual coils, so I had to stop after a while an push the coils down with my fingertips to get an uniform spiral wire.

I measured 1m of the craft wire to give me an idea how much spiral wire could be made of this length.
I was able to make 11,8cm of spiral wire from 1m of the silver coated 0,2mm copper wire in about 16 minutes.
I guess the time will improve with skill, this was measured during my first try.

When I had enough spiral wire for a test braiding, I went for a simple P9 Birka posament. The spiral wire I made was not as smooth to work with as the Tenntråd. I guess the copper work hardened while coiling it. So the next step will be to get some fine silver wire and real silk as core material.
But I'm quite happy with the overall outcome and the technique works very well to produce a considerable amount of spiral wire, which is needed to make Birka posaments.

Tenntråd Time

I absolutely adore those lovely Sami bracelets, but they are very expensive if you want to buy one. I found a little crafting kit for such a bracelet, including all materials and a tutorial.

Following the tutorial I braided the tenntråd ( a textile core, wrapped with thin silver alloyed tin wire) and also used the narrow reindeer leather strap.

The braid then had to be attached to a wider leather strip and closures made of leather and reindeer antler were sewn to the ends. The leather strip then was closed on the backside by stitching.

I also ordered a length of tenntråd to test braiding some Birka posaments.

Countertrading with Petr Florianek

Last year Petr from Gullinbursti asked me to make him some shiny embellishment for his viking time based reenactment.
He wanted a tabletwoven braid, brocaded with silver. The original was one of the braids from the Mammen grave, Denmark:

I used the pattern notation by Egon Hansen and the photos of the original. The info on the site of the Danish National Museum is very good and you can zoom in up to the finest detail.
The Materials are fine red wool and a very fine thread of spun silver with a silken core.

Furthermore he asked me to make him some posaments as found at Birka, Sweden. More precisely, grave nr. 524.

I made the posaments for him in silver wire and some more in brass. You know, I was in the right mood for mass production then ;)

So, this was my part :)

As Petr is an excellent bladesmith and knifemaker, his part of the trading was a beautiful folding knife.
The description from his page says:
"Wrought iron back, HC steel edge, stag antler handle slabes carved in ringerike style tendrils, silver ring, iron rivets, handmade glass bead."

Once again, thank you, Petr! :)

Knochenrecycling

Some months ago, Fimbulmyrk brought me a bone from the woods. It was a bit dirty and scattered at the ends, but I could see some hidden beauty within.
So I cooked it, cut off the ends and gave it a fine polish from the in- and outside.
Then I covered the middle section with wire in trichinopoly technique (viking knitting) and added one of my posament beads.
I also made a two-in-two chain and a little flattened hook.

So, now look at this dirty bone from the woods:

To hold the needles in place inside the bone I felted two plugs from wool.

In search of the sun

Nass.

 Wet. Inside, outside, everywhere.
The baby dyer's woad is reaching its head in search of the sun.

To have something in my spinning stash in case the rain goes on and on and on... I dyed a 150g roving. Should keep me busy and colourful enough ;)

Aaand there was the annual hobby expo, of course :) There were not much new things to explore, but I knew what I was looking fore and pillaged some booths with lovely metal and glass beads.

I especially like these two beads in the shape of a goddess. Sadly, those were the only ones available. I have to investigate a bit, need more of those beauties ;)

And then. Arctic Fire 2013 started. Those mad guys wanted to make a sword and scabbard in only four days. With live broadcasts and a riddle twined into the whole idea. What a great thought. The blade is fnished, the quest goes on. If you are lucky and can guess the name of the sword and the place where it will be hidden, you have the chance to look for it in real and hopefully find it. And eventually claim it. What a wonderful way to bring some magic into this world.
Go to the homepage. I deeply recommend this project.

Schaut doch mal vorbei :)

While watching the boys I wasn't idle. I grabbed some glassbeads and wire and turned them into wire coated treasures ;)
I made different versions of them and there are more to come.
I'll put a bunch of them into the Shop during next week, I think.

Messerscheide mit Posamenten

Sheath with passements

I got a lovely knife with a damascus blade and a yew handle from Fimbulmyrk and it wanted to have a decent covering ;)

I had some greenish leather lying around and it fits the colour of the handle very well. I also hade a spare brass wire passement I made after a find from Birka. I placed it on the leather just for fun, but it fit perfectly, so I decided to use it too. I drew the design for the sheath and pulled out the tools :)

Und das ist dann dabei herausgekommen :)

This is what I came up with.

Regenzeit
