Gokstad-Style Basket Backpack

Hey there, my dear readers! It's not that I'm lazy and nothing is happening here, quite the contrary, lots of work and no time for modern media ;)
But at last here's something new for you. I was not very content with the wicker backpack I own. It's heavy, has a sqare form that gets smaller towards the bottom and tends to bend me backwards when loaded heavily with all the things a lady needs to carry around ;)
There's a find from viking times from the Gokstad boat grave. Not a complete backpack, in fact, just two wooden boards, one of them with holes around the edge:

The find itself leaves room for speculation and interpretation. I did not want to recreate it, rather than have a useful, light, good looking container to carry my things.
So I decided to use very light materials, not authentic. For the board I used a wood called Paulownia, which is sometimes used for surfboards, due to its properties. For the basket part I used thin beech wood rods as stakes and rattan.

As the basket grew, I found it more and more useful to use a cardboard template to achieve the right form.

I ended the weaving with an other (flat) type of rattan and secured the edge with a decorative wrapping.

As the basket part was finished I had to think about how to carry that thing ;)  Of course I wanted to make the straps myself and didn't want something boring. So I made a long tablet woven band with a Birka pattern.

I attached the straps with wooden rods inside the basket and put some metal strap buckles on, so I can adjust the straps when I wear my thick woollen coat.

I have used this backpack now on several occasions and I must say that I'm really happy with it. I can carry it all day without complaining about the weight or uncomfortable fit, and a lot of things fit inside. If Mary Poppins were viking, this would be the thing to have ;)

Little Seax

My love gave me a lovely three layer laminate seax blade which he made out of mild steel and carburized spring steel. Some time ago he used to give complete knives to me, now it's only just the blades. So, work had to be done ;)

First I gave the blade a bit of etching and polishing.

Then I put on a handle from pieces of reindeer antler, walnut, olive ash and some leather.

 Going artistic ;)

To give some highlights I put in some garnets and a bit of nickel silver.

The patterns are based on fnds from Birka and Gniezdowo.

So, now it seems I have to think about a decent sheath design ;)

My very first knife!

All the time I see those beautiful knifes everyone makes. Now I finally worked up the courage to do it myself and give it a try.
As materials, I chose a Lauri70 Blade, a brass fitting, reindeer antler, walnut wood, buffalo horn and leather. And a little mother of pearl thingy.

I measured and cut everything and wrote numbers and marks on it to be sure the direction of the grain was right in the end.

Then the smelly part ;) I set the parts in plce with epoxy glue and clamped the knife. To make sure that the preassure didn't affect the blade, I cut a slot (just a bit longer than the blade) into a strip of wood and placed the blade in the slot.

After drying, I rasped, filed and sanded the handle. Looked more like a knife now! ;)

I decided to carve the antler part. I found a beautiful pattern from the Isle of Man (fig. 28 - 3).

when the carving was finished, I tanned it with an experimental mixture of vinegar, iron sulphate -which I normally use for plant dyeing- and coffee.
Then I set a little drop shaped mother of pearl chip into the back of the handle and oiled the whole thing.

Well,

I have made a knife!

Huzzah! :D

Haithabu-Taschenbügel

Ok, I admit, long time no post. But I wasn't lazy at all ;)

So, I wanted to have another proper bag that fits my scandinavian garb. I have a naalbound one, but it is quite stretchy if you put in many or heavy things. Not good for proper viking shopping ;)

There are finds from Hedeby, remains of wooden handles that were attached to bags.
My handles are a free interpretation of those from Hedeby. I carved them from beechwood.

I want to use the red leather in the background to sew the actual bag.

After carving the form, I treated the wood with a stain from dark beer. You see, it's always good to have a stock of dark beer ;)

Schreinervater ;)

                  Tadaaaaaa!  ;)
